The blonde could not even recall what she was doing when the alarm went off. One moment bled into the other as everyone crowded towards the exits. Her heart was still beating far too fast. “Thank goodness.” Daniella looked down at her leg, scrunching her face up at the damage. She hadn’t thought that it could be that bad until she looked at it. “I suppose you are right. Stay safe. We don’t know what else might have happened.”
“Yeah, you too,”Lottie nodded as she turned to head the direction of home and left the other woman to get her leg assessed.
“They probably already know.” She watched the flashing lights reflecting off the building as the authorities worked to restore order. “It might have been. I couldn’t tell. To be honest, it all happened so quickly.”
“It did all happen very fast. I was about to go and get another drink and then wham!” Lottie turned surveying the sight, “At least there doesn’t seem to be anyone else coming out so hopefully that means everyone s already clear.” She had just spotted Jim who had helped her out of the building. “I think I will head home and have a long bath, get rid of this smokey smell. You should really get yourself checked out by the paramedics.”
Daniella glanced back at the building. “I hope that there aren’t.” She sighed. “It’s just that I thought that I heard something being thrown and breaking the windows. I don’t know if it was or not, but it worries me.”
“I’m sure someone will be asking questions so you could tell them that although I’m surprised you could hear that over the music. Are you sure it wasn’t just something on a track that you heard and your mind is now playing tricks?”
Daniella could not look back at the building, afraid of what she might see. Instead she focused her attention on the woman besides her. “I hope so too.” She bit her lip, worrying about those close to her. “We are lucky that the alarm went off when it did.”
“We know that the alarm system works well if nothing else,” Lottie agreed with a wry laugh. “I haven’t heard anything suggesting there have been any serious injuries, have you?”
The first explosion she’d mistaken for gun fire. The wave of panic after kept her in place as she looked around to find the source of the issue. She’d never seen a real fire that was not contained before that moment. Those few seconds in shock had almost been her undoing. The blonde thanked God or whatever force was looking out for her that she’d gone for the more expensive costume rather than the polyester. If she had, Dani believed the there was no way that she ever would have been able to get the giant flaming bow separated from her body without her entire dress catching fire. It was hard enough to walk with the tight skirt before the flames had licked up her calf. She whimpered, coughing as she finally made it out of the emergency exit to the outside, almost collapsing in relief as she held onto the streetlamp. She turned to the person closest to her, not caring who they were. “Does this mean that we are safe for now?”
Lottie was out thanks to Jim and as she looked at all the scared faces around her she knew how lucky they were to get out. Turning at the voice she took a breath, “I guess so. Or rather I certainly hope so.”
